The capital of Baja California Sur is positioned at site number 18 and stands out for being one of the oldest cities in the region. The New York Times also mentions La Paz resistance to “resort-style large-scale development”, thus remaining unknown to foreigners.
It also emphasises areas such as the Espiritu Santo and La Partida islands, which have become a Marine World Heritage protected area of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO ) thanks to the push by local environmentalists decades ago. This designation, aims “to preserve the coast and offshore areas, home to such rich biodiversity that the Sea of Cortez is known as the ‘Aquarium of the World.’”
